An Interval

A performance by Junction's Adult Drama Group...

An Interval was a performance about comedy, about entertainment, about theatre. Largely improvised, the show was structured around a simple set of rules, in which the performers attempted to tell a seemingly endless list of jokes. Without a preset order, and without a script, the performers had to push themselves to keep the show moving and to keep the jokes flowing; if they failed, the show would fail. This was a performance about risk, about chance encounters, about the ever present possibility (perhaps inevitability) of failure.

The Group...
For five weeks Junction’s Adult Drama Group worked with Chris Williams (director of performance company Drunken Chorus), to come up with their own, original piece of theatre. With only two hours rehearsal each week (that’s a total of just TEN HOURS!), the group created a 15 minute contemporary performance from scratch. They worked hard, took risks and many of them braved the stage for the first time.
And yet, the work they created was more than just a piece of community theatre. They explored something new, something different, maybe even something challenging.
Whatever we can call this piece of work, there is something more important at the centre of this project, and that is the enjoyment of the group; their pride, their bravery to stand up and try something they have never done before, never really knowing where it will take them.
