Based on Penelope Fitzgerald’s novel, free-spirited widow, Florence Green, opens a bookshop in a sleepy 1950s coastal town. Her literary selections, including Lolita and Fahrenheit 451, don’t agree with some of the sheltered and conservative locals. Fighting damp, cold and considerable local apathy she causes a cultural awakening in a town which has not changed for centuries, and finds a kindred spirit in Mr Brundish who is himself sick of the town’s stale atmosphere. But this mini social revolution soon brings her fierce enemies who are determined to shut her shop down. They begin a struggle not just for the bookshop but for the very heart and soul of the town in this charming celebration of art, and worlds waiting to be discovered behind book covers.
