In 1947, Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy of India, charged with handing the country back to its people after 300 years of British rule. Moving into the great Viceroy’s House, Mountbatten and his family get to know the 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants who reside there, and grow to love their adopted land. As the political elite converge on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupts, resulting in a decision to divide the country and create a new Muslim homeland: Pakistan. The complex birth of a nation and the impact on it’s people is explored in this sumptuous period drama.
