Septet in E-flat, Op.20
The Swedish composer Franz Berwald wrote his Grand Septet in 1828, the year after Beethoven died. Beethoven’s Septet was his most popular work, but he became irritated it overshadowed his other pieces. His friend, Carl Czerny, wrote: “He… grew angry because of the universal applause it received.”
Between these two works is an opportunity to hear Mozart’s sublime Quintet. Three celebrated works of chamber music on a larger scale.
