Canal Boat Diaries

As a narrowboater, Robbie is world renowned. Canal Boat Diaries can be seen on BBC Four and Yesterday channels. This vlog-style documentary is all about life on the canals in the midlands and North West of England and was the first time a documentary of its kind was shot using a mobile phone as the main camera. Robbie also edited some of the footage from inside his 44 year old narrowboat. The program was previewed regionally on BBC One and featured Robbie’s own music compositions which were also recorded onboard.

Goole’s story has always been shaped by water. Built 200 years ago as a working port, the town grew through its connections to rivers, canals and the wider waterways network that carried goods, people and ideas across the country.

Those waterways are still part of everyday life today. Through stories, music and lived experience, they continue to connect communities and shape how people live and work. Canal Boat Stories – Live! brings those modern canal journeys to life, sharing real experiences from the waterways in a way that feels immediate and personal.

As part of Goole’s 200th birthday, this event celebrates our town’s deep connection to canals and waterways. It reflects a way of life that has evolved over generations, but is still very much alive today.
