Barn Dancing

Make friends and have fun while enjoying some lively exercise with Janet Porter, dance leader, and Nigel Swan, music and sound, of The Polka Dots Barn Dance Band.

Barn or Ceilidh dances are done as a couple, whilst traditional social dances include the Gay Gordons, Canadian Barn Dance and Bridge of Athlone. You do not need experience, or a partner, just enthusiasm. The workshops are aimed at beginner level.

Session 1 | 27 Jun | POPULAR CEILIDH

Country dance moves such as do-si-do, balance and swing, casting, promenading, right and left across.
Couple dances: Boston 2 Step and Military 2 Step.
Set dances to jigs and reels: Farmers Jig, Oxo Reel, Snowball.
Change partner dances: Canadian Barn Dance, Circassian Circle, Cumberland
Square Eight., Cumberland Reel

Session 2 | 04 Jul | HORNPIPES, POLKAS, WALTZES

Teach the steps before introducing the dances.
Hornpipe: Clopton Bridge
Polka: Heel and Toe Polka
Schottiche: Highland Schottiche, Albert Schottiche
Waltz: St Bernard’s, Spanish Waltz, Waltz Country Dance

Session 3 | 11 Jul | ENGLISH AND PLAYFORD

Advanced dance moves: ladies chain, right and left through gating.
English dances: Leaving of Liverpool, Neils Jig, Balance the Star, Around
One , Hot Cross Bun, Blaydon Races,
Old English Playford: Indian Queen, Childgrove, Nampwich Fair.

Session 4 | 18 Jul | SCOTTISH AND IRISH CEILIDH

Scottish style : teach reels of 3 and 4 . Dances: Gay Gordons, Dashing White
Sergeant Irish style : Bridge of Athlone, Strip the Willow

Session 5 | 25 Jul | AMERICAN CONTRAS AND SQUARES

Teach moves: American style balance and swing and twirling do si do, plus the basic structure of duple minor dances (aka Contra) for:
Timber Salvage Reel, Simplicity Swing, Flirtation Reel
Squares: I Wanna Be Near You, Swanee Square.

GRAND FINALE CEILIDH WITH THE POLKA DOTS BARN DANCE BAND

This will be a separate bookable event in our Auditorium space, to include dances popular in the earlier sessions which will be accessible for dancers with little or no experience.
Showcase of a more advanced dance such as Around One by the regular dancers.
Music will be Roy Hardacre on melodeon, Janet on clarinet/recorder and Nigel Swan on keyboard.
Ploughman’s lunch included.
